How to Choose Clothes for Children – Holidaying with a toddler in the sun

When you take your toddler somewhere sunny and warm, you need to consider that you are going to a country that may not give you easy access to buying extra clothing while you’re there. It’s better to overcompensate on packing clothing when you are going abroad.

When you go abroad with your toddler take at least four or five changes of outfits for every day you are there. Like you, your toddler will get too hot and will need to feel refreshed.

If you are taking your buggy with you, make sure you take your sun parasol or sun canopy too as they may not be easy to buy once you are on holiday. And although it sounds silly, it may be worth travelling with the rain cover for the buggy as well.

Take more UV protection swimwear than you think you need and do buy some UV protection clothing as you will spend a lot of time out and about. Take at least three sun hats to make sure that should you misplace one, you can easily replace it.

Take a mixture of cotton and linen clothes with long and short sleeves and long and short trouser leg lengths or dress lengths. It means that if you have to go out in the heat of the day, you can cover your child up really easily. Keep baby covered up in the evening too as you don’t want to have your wee one covered in mosquito bites.

If your toddler has a favourite item of clothing make sure that it travels too so that she has something familiar to wear. Sleeveless tops with Thomas the Tank emblems or Dora the Explorer dresses go down very well when a toddler is feeling a bit lost.

Do still take a warm jacket or sweat top with you as you may find tropical storms are on the cards and always take it when you travel. For your toddler’s comfort at night body suits and cotton short sleeved tops are great as they can help keep them cool.

Air conditioning can be great for adults but children do find it chilly during the night. When you’re first there keep a check on how cool baby is with the air conditioning switched on. And take a couple of sleep suits and pyjamas with you to make sure you can keep your toddler’s temperature steady during the night.

If you think about your itinerary before you go and then look at what your toddler is going to be doing while on holiday you shouldn’t run into challenges re the wardrobe when you’re on holiday in the sun.

Extra considerations are making sure you take armbands with you for your toddler’s safety in the pool; lots of sun factor cream with a rating of 40+; sun protection clothing with a rating of at least 40+; sun UV radiation wrist band indicators and insect repellent suitable for toddlers.
