How to Choose Clothes for Holidaying with a toddler in the snow

For years families have been heading off to the ski slopes with baby, toddler and young adult in tow.

If you are taking a toddler on a holiday in the snow you need to take clothes that are going to protect them from the glare of the snow and the sun – making sure you have enough changes of clothes to cope when they get wet.

Toddlers should be wearing their own ski suits or all weather suits lined with fleece or thermal lining that will keep them warm if they have to spend anytime in the snow. Gloves are of vital importance and a warm hat is a must.

You should be looking at purchasing ski wear for toddlers that is made from waterproof and windproof Hydrofort fabric, providing reliable protection from the elements. If possible skiwear should be thermally insulated with something like Thermo-guard, an incredibly light yet warm fibre that is quick-drying and easy to care for.

Jackets should have a soft fleece lining with adjustable cuffs and if possible for slightly older children a drawcord hem. Salopettes should have integral adjustable braces, waist adjusters, padded knees, integral snow gaitors and pockets. Generally skiwear is available to toddlers from the age of two.

For slightly older toddlers you need to try and encourage them to wear their sun shades or goggles and encourage them to wear thermal underwear and great warm socks with water resistant snow shoes.

To help insulate your toddler, you should try to get hold of micro fleece thermals like long johns and cotton polo neck tops – excellent for retaining body heat. Again these unisex garments tend to be made for three year olds and above.

High performance kids’ ski goggles come in sizes from about two years of age to 14 years. You need to look for a minimum protection of UV400 with anti-fog filter lenses for clear vision in all conditions.

Ski gloves start in sizes from about two years of age up to 14 years of age and should have thermo guard or equivalent lining. Ski gloves must be water repellent and really fit your toddler.

Your main focus is to make sure toddlers are not exposed to the strong sunshine and definitely don’t end up freezing cold.

If you decide to take your toddler to Lapland to meet Santa, toddlers do not generally have clothing provided by your travel agent. Travel companies suggest that you speak to your GP before you take a young toddler on holiday to the Arctic Circle.

If you do decide to take your toddler to Lapland, you need to find an all in one snow suit that will fit snugly and keep them cosy. Operators tend to prefer that only toddlers around three years of age be taken to Lapland although many of their brochures state two years of age.
