Summer Baby Clothes – Choosing summer clothes for babies

Babies born in the summer months need very little in the way of clothes to begin with. If you’re on a budget, having a summer baby can be really good for your purse strings as you really can get away with buying basic outfits for your little one.

The main things to consider when you are thinking about clothes for a brand new baby in the summer are breathability of fabric, softness of fabric, washability, ease of use and accessibility for nappy changing!

Newborn babies have a tendency to move their arms and legs quite a bit because they haven’t learned to control their movements. It takes a few weeks for this to settle so make sure you buy clothes that allow some freedom of movement. You’re also going to be battling with nappies early on so allow yourself the chance to quickly change a nappy by buying bodysuits and sleepsuits that have easy to use poppers.

Because baby’s neck muscles are not very strong at birth, baby will need lots of support from you so it may be easier to buy baby clothes that do not need to pull over baby’s head.

You may also want to buy a small selection of sleeveless vest cardigans and little sweatpants to take account of the warm weather – again look for a soft, breathable fabric with no rough seams.

Beanie hats are a great idea for young babies particularly when it’s cooler – babies’ heads are big for the size of their bodies and a lot of heat is lost through the head so make sure that when nights are cooler or we see a heavy downpour in the summer, babies are kept warm.

In the summer months, babies sleep patterns will be sporadic to begin with because they are new to the world and the fact that our summers have been quite hot. Sleepsuits are good to use when summer nights are cooler but just keep an eye on the temperature in the room and a close watch on baby’s temperature too. Sometimes it is better to use a bodysuit with a light sheet in the summer.

It is worth looking at John Lewis, Mothercare and Boots for great clothes ideas for young babies. Top brands for sleepsuits and bodysuits include No Added Sugar, Baby-O and Petit Bateau.

Summer Hats for babies

Hats are an essential summer item for baby so make sure if baby is born in the summer she has a floppy hat available to shade her head from the sun. All the big nursery stores have a range of summer hats – Mothercare usually offers the sweet Humphrey’s Corner range and have a look at Kiddicare and John Lewis as well.

Little beanie hats from No Added Sugar are really cute and come in pirate stripes as well as pastel colours. The beanie hats all match the baby all-in-ones which are great for baby to wear on a cooler summer evening. The No Added Sugar baby clothes range is particularly tempting so make sure you ask your friends and relatives to have a look at the babywear at No Added Sugar.
